The Break-In

Arlington, Virginia
Nathan Hale Elementary School
Friday, 9:30 p.m.

It was a cool night in Arlington, Virginia, at Nathan Hale Elementary School. Crickets chirped loudly and trees cast long shadows over the grass. Every animal and every human seemed to be in a deep sleep. . . . almost. A shadow moved out of the trees. It was the shadow of a boy. If you peered closely you could see his features. He was wearing black boots with a silver button on each side. In the dazzling moonlight, the buttons shone brightly. Half hidden inside a pocket just over his heart you could make out bold letters on a badge: G-E-E-K-S. What did the letters mean? What was he doing here?

My name is Anthony Harrison. I am one of the original members of the G.E.E.K.S. Our organization used to have additional members but one of them betrayed us when she confiscated our Thinker 2000 and became a member of our rival organization called the N.E.R.D.S. Tonight, my goal is to break into the N.E.R.D.S. headquarters. Get in, and possibly destroy it, because I work for an organization called G.E.E.K.S, which translates to Genius Evil-Minded Espionage Kids Society. We G.E.E.K.S. have hated the N.E.R.D.S., our rival organization, for what seems like decades because of what they did to us. We are going to take back the Thinker 2000 and rule the world.

I have to find a way into the building, perhaps I can. . . .I stop in my tracks. A tree branch swooshes back and forth in an overhead tree. I quickly withdraw my laser gun.

“Relax, Anthony, it’s only me!” a girl’s voice says. “Oh,” I say, lowering the laser gun. It is my assistant, Charlotte Screan. She is wearing aquamarine spyglasses with web access, location finder, and a tiny pin gun that can shoot bullets. Her body is covered by a sleek, black jumpsuit with a belt around her waist. Her straight, reddish brown hair falls to her shoulders. The belt carries laser guns, a pair of black gloves, and other classified weapons I can’t speak about.

“Let’s go! We can’t waste any time. We have to get inside,” she says, slipping from the shadows of the trees.

We creep to an entry that leads into the vent system where I pull out my laser gun and fire. The laser slices through the metal, melting it instantly. The small vent door falls off, and we crawl through. The space opens up, allowing Charlotte and me to now stand straight.

“What is that?” I whisper to Charlotte, who looks around carefully. There in front of us is a very elaborate security system. It consists of laser shooters with piranha traps filled flesh eating fish in deep pools.

“I know exactly what this is. It’s a very technical S.S.S. or Spy Security System. I remember learning about the S.S.S. during a session with my mentor, before. . . .” Charlotte stops and her eyes fill with tears. I know why Charlotte reacts this way. It is because her mentor was a professional spy, who sadly died in an explosion last year.

“Well, we have to get past this security system, OK?” I gently touch her shoulder with my hand.

“Let’s gear up!” Charlotte replies. We quickly put on our high-powered leather gloves and get ready to go. Charlotte jumps ahead first, dodging to avoid the red laser beams and specialized traps. I follow, trying to keep up with her agile moves over what seems like hundreds of traps

Finally, we land on the safe side. Charlotte has drips of sweat running down her cheeks. She pulls off her gloves and wipes her face.

“You did better than expected, partner,” I say, giving her a high five. “You too,” replies Charlotte. We continue in the vent when suddenly a trap door opens under our feet. A good spy would never scream, but in this case I did. I let myself go limp and fall.

Waking up, I am still a bit disoriented from the fall and Charlotte is nowhere to be seen. “Well, well, well. Look who came to break into our agency,” a familiar voice echoes from behind me. I sit up and adjust my eyes to the dim glow of the chamber where I see a shadow looming nearby. I know who it is.

“Wow, your security system is better than last time. Step into the light,” I say to the figure. In the dim light, the figure says, "It's been a long time, Anthony.” Standing before me is the leader of N.E.R.D.S., Ruby Peet. Years ago, she actually was a member of the G.E.E.K.S before she defected to the N.E.R.D.S. and betrayed us by stealing the Thinker 2000.

The race is on. . . . .G.E.E.K.S. vs N.E.R.D.S. Good versus Evil. Who will rule the world?
