Live Performance at the 2008 Ceremony

We chose to perform the scene from the book A Boy at War when Adam, Davi and Martin meet the morning of December 7, 1941, to go fishing in Pearl Harbor. While they are fishing in a small rowboat they found, Japanese planes begin to bomb the navy ships at Pearl Harbor.

To make this scene, we used a blue table cloth to represent the water and we drew a boat out of paper and painted it brown. We used real oars, bamboo fishing poles and a net. The navy ship belonged to David and the plane belonged to another boy in our class.

The background music was sung and recorded by our 4th grade class. We had help from Mrs. Skudlarick, our technology teacher who did the filming, and support from our teacher, Mrs. Ching, and our Librarian Mrs. Koo.

Our entire class read A Boy at War as a class assignment. We hope you like our performance!

Zhané Mejino

Hello,

My name is Zhané Tiara Mejino. I go to school at Barber's Point Elementary. I am in 5th grade. I am ten years old. My teacher's name is Mr. Karsk. My school librarian, Ms. Shima, told me about the contest.

I am entering the Nene Award Performance Contest 2008. I wrote a song based on the book: "A Boy at War." I was inspired to write about the character of Adam, who lost his father during the bombing of Pearl Harbor, back in World War II. This song reflects how Adam may have felt when he learned that his father died.

My Song is called: "A World Without You." After reading the book, I spent two months writing and trying to sing out the words to my song. I wrote most of the song, and my Mom helped me a little with some of the lyrics. But, I came up with the entire tune and melody. I practiced singing my song for a few weeks before shooting the video.

I picked Pearl Harbor as the location to shoot my video because that is where Adam's character lost his father. I included the lyrics to my song and I hope that you will enjoy watching the DVD of my performance.

Sincerely
Zhané Tiara Mejino

The process my group member and I went through to create this skit was first we wrote a poem and figured out matching movements. Next we rehearsed and after that we rehearsed more. Then we made revisions, created props and rehearsed a bit more. Lastly, we filmed.

On a scale of 1(least) to 10 (greatest) explaining the amount of adult help we received, I would give us a 1, because all the help we got was my mother, Amy Tousman, who filmed.
