Nēnē Award Persuasive Contest

Only ONE entry will be judged per student. Students should only enter ONE Nene contest category.

Entries Due: February 21, 2013

Select one scene, or idea, from one of these books The Lemonade War OR
The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Describe what elements in the scene, or
idea, (imagery, point of view, author's word choice, etc.) made this scene
important to you.

Checklist

Does my entry identify one important scene or idea from the book and show/explain why it is important?
Do I give evidence from the text (examples/excerpts) to support my ideas?

For the essay, podcast, website or blog:
Did I explain how this evidence supports my ideas?
Do I have a beginning, middle and end? Did I introduce my ideas, explain my ideas with evidence/excerpts, and wrap up my ideas in a conclusion?
Did I write clearly and persuasively?

For the poster:
Did I focus on a one scene from the book?
Did I design my poster in a unique way?
Does my drawing evoke emotions in the viewer?
Is my poster neat and attractive?

Guidelines

Podcasts and songs should be no longer than 4 minutes.
Suggested length for essays is 500 words, double spaced, and should contain an introduction, body with excerpts/supporting details and conclusion. Essays should not be a group project.
Posters should be original artwork created by the student on paper at least 8-1/2 x 11 inches and no larger than 11 X 17 inches (please do not fold!) Hand drawn—no clip art or other pre-drawn items—with attention to design and details from one scene of the text. (not based on book illustrations or movie) Posters should not be a group project.
No more than 3 people to a group. Group members may be in 4th, 5th, or 6th grade or any combination.
All entries must include a brief statement explaining the process the student(s) went through to create the entry and the ways adults helped.
Entries (except posters) must be submitted as a Quicktime, web address, jpg, doc, pdf format and will become the property of the Hawaii State Nene Committee for promotion purposes only.

W.4.1, 5.1 & 6.1 Write opinion pieces/arguments on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information/relevant evidence.
W.4.5, 5.5 & 6.5 With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, and editing.
W.4.6, 5.6 & 6.6 With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others
